Designed for secondary school students with no prior knowledge of Chinese, Go Far with Chinese Level 1A uses a proficiency-based approach to give learners a solid foundation in all four language skills. The series’ emphasis on authentic communicative tasks and activities helps ensure students build the confidence to use their budding language skills and newly acquired cultural knowledge of China in the real world. 

In Go Far with Chinese Level 1A, students follow Isabella and Martin Lopez, two American teenagers whose mother receives a work assignment overseas, as they begin learning Chinese, move to China, and explore their new neighborhood in Beijing. Each Chapter brings a new episode in the lives of the Lopezes in the form of an entertaining comic story that combines the Chapter vocabulary and grammar in a novel way. Level 1A covers topics that are both relevant and interesting to teenage language learners, such as family, pets, sports, and music. A special introductory lesson guides students through the basics of Mandarin pronunciation, the Chinese writing system, and basic word order.

Level 1A is the first volume in the split edition of Level 1. Levels 1A and 1B teach the same content as Level 1 and are intended to be used for two years at the middle school level or in programs with limited instructional hours. Level 1A introduces approximately 180 new words.

About the Author

Ying Jin is a Chinese teacher in the Fremont Union High School District in California. She has more than 20 years of experience in Chinese instruction and is active in the teaching community through STARTALK, CLASS, California Language Teachers' Association, and more. In 2018, ACTFL named her the National Language Teacher of the Year, the first Chinese language teacher to receive this honor. She is passionate about promoting greater understanding of Chinese language and culture.

Lead Instructional Contributors

Chunmei Guan is a Chinese instructor at Logansport Community School Corporation in Indiana. She was named Chinese Teacher of the Year and earned the Outstanding Contribution award by the Indiana Chinese Language Teachers Association in 2016. She serves as the 2nd Vice-President of the Indiana Foreign Language Teachers Association and as an associate member of the National Council of State Supervisors for Languages. She is also a member of CLASS, CLTA-US, ACTFL, and ASSCE. She is dedicated to promoting cross-cultural and global awareness as an educator in the field of world language instruction.

Cilei Han is a teacher of Chinese language at Lake Oswego and Lakeridge High Schools in Oregon as well as a Challenge Program Instructor at Portland State University. She serves as a board member of the CLTA-US, as a chair of the CLTA K-12 Working Group, and as president of her regional Chinese Language Teachers Association-Oregon. She is dedicated to assisting in the development of stronger K-12 Chinese programs nationwide.

Zoey Liu teaches Chinese in the Fremont Union High School District in California. In 2017, she received the Yao Memorial Award for Outstanding New Teacher from CLASS. She is committed to helping students grow as global citizens by deepening their knowledge of Chinese language and culture.

Diane Neubauer, currently a PhD student in Foreign Language and ESL Education at the University of Iowa, has more than a decade of experience teaching Chinese at both elementary and secondary schools. She frequently conducts professional development workshops for language teachers and works to support and develop the community of Chinese teachers through her role as vice-chair of the ACTFL Comprehension-based Communicative Language Teaching Special Interest Group. She also regularly blogs about ideas and strategies for teaching Chinese.

Erica Pollard is the foreign language department director and an AP® Chinese instructor at Hingham Public Schools in Massachusetts. She has extensive experience in curriculum design and has developed curricula for Chinese language courses from beginner to AP® levels. She also shares her teaching insights and knowledge through her work on the College Board's AP® Chinese Language and Culture Development Committee.
